End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

In the United States, approximately 500,000 individuals suffer from ESRD. Annually, more than 100,000 new cases are diagnosed and roughly 90,000 ESRD patients die. With early detection and adequate management of chronic kidney disease, the progression of disease and onset of ESRD can be delayed. Nonetheless, the primary risk factors for kidney disease, diabetes and hypertension, continue to be endemic in the population. Renal replacement therapy refers to the two treatment options for ESRD: dialysis and transplantation. Dialysis is the process of artificially cleansing the blood of wastes, salt and excess water. The most common method of dialysis is in-center hemodialysis, which requires that patients visit a clinic approximately 3 times a week for 3-5 hours.

Recent projects have broadened our scope considerably beyond ESRD into a diverse range of diseases including cancer, multiple sclerosis, hyperlipidemia, breast reconstruction and hernia repair, AIS and others.
